Dear Friends Who's Faces I Can't Pick In A Line Up, or Picket's Version of the Christmas Letter

Merry Happy,

The good news is that we are nearly done with this heinous year.

My kids did nothing remarkably awesome. They shot some soccer balls into little goals but truth is, they never know where their backpacks are so that sucks for them and me. One of 'em learned early "Frosty the Snowman" on the recorder, but her mother has deemed the recorder "icky" and I dare anyone to argue that it is not in fact the most awful instrument ever.

I'd prefer a six-string in the New Year.

My husband got unemployed in February and since then, I moved in my very imaginative mind to at least three other cities. Turns out, we'll likely stay put. I'm not sure if I am happy or sad about that.

And I "wrote" a book. I use those quotations because for me and Carolyn: well, there's more books to write... and this one was easy.

This sucky year? Damn. We held it together, us Pickets, even as others became undone in ways I never expected: the "best" marriages collapsed, husbands realized their sexuality, and love showed itself as a drug.

And our own world changed, too -- duh -- but we carried on.

Our kids grow up, but we can't stop the funny:

Anyhoo, how are you?

With Great Love,

Ms Picket

Feliz merry, dude. There were good parts to 2009 too. Kipp's attitude towards his workday. Paul staying so busy with work when he's "out of work." Rory 'getting' school and kicking ass at soccer. Bridget still letting herself be a kid when she so very much wants to be a teen. And of course, playing with me because I'm awesome.

I'm unemployed as of 2009 so I feel your sentiment. Somehow surviving just like the Pickets. Merry Christmas and here's to a 2010 that kicks 2009 to a distant memory.

Since I've also been out of work since June '08, I try to remember what my pastor said: "Today is one day less of being unemployed." May the end of this temporary situation come VERY EARLY in 2010 for all of us! Merry Christmas, Ms. Picket.

Our little 6lb dog pooped on the floor under my desk. I didn't realize it until we got home last night. I walked right past it and went to bed.
It is still there as I type and, for some reason, this post got me to stop worrying about it while also giving me the disire to get a tissue and move it to the trash.
Happy holidays, Mizz P!

HI Sugar Plum! I'm happy to be alive and well but happier for 2010 to get here. I think 2009 was pretty rough on a lot of us.

Glad to hear you're stickin' it through!

xoxo,
me

So, for what it's worth: you don't know me, hence the anon. But I stumbled across your blog. And, not that you need me to affirm anything, you're a hell of a good writer.

Like, really, really good.

Keep it up. I'll keep reading.

Love back to you, friend whose face I couldn't pick out in an airport. I was OK with 2009, but then we managed to escape the whole financial clusterfuck in out little socialist paradise in the Southern Ocean. Wishing you the best for 2010.
